I Don't Need a New Year's Resolution

I did it! Last year, I made a New Year’s resolution to which I actually stuck. I just went back and read my first installment of SIT at the BAR from January of last year. My resolution was to get certified, which I did, and to continue to write, which I have. Interesting too, that this year, on my quest to consume fresh and natural food and drink, I lost weight. Without really even trying, I lost about 10 pounds. This is amazing for someone like me, who has obsessed her whole life about diet and exercise.

I was the type of person, who was always onto the latest fad, and usually it worked…mostly, I’d go full throttle at it, lose about 5-7 pounds and then go back to my regular eating habits. Yo-yo! Yup, that was me. In my quest to write about cocktails and natural ingredients, I really became more aware. It’s like they say, you learn more when you teach. In a way, I became obsessed with what I was putting into my body, not from a weight loss perspective, but rather from a naturalist’s perspective.
Now, I am not trying to sound elitist here; and, I definitely do not adhere to any sort of strict dietary mantra. I guess I just really try to think about each thing I put in my body. It all started with Sitting at the Bar and watching how drinks are made. Does the bartender use short cuts? Fresh/homemade ingredients? All these types of questions and writing about it, made me think a lot about process. I could go on and wax philosophical about technology and the loss of process, but I don’t think you want to hear about that…not here anyway. What I do think is that as we lose the knowledge of the process of things, we don’t really think about how the end result is achieved. You ever see how a chicken nugget is made? If you have, you’d probably never eat one again. But process is very important, especially when we are talking about sustenance, because it’s eye opening. To see how a thing is made can be a huge turn on or a major downer, when once upon a time, you never thought about it.
Okay, so, I know you all don’t have the time or inclination to research the process of all food you consume, but let me challenge you with this. Just try to understand what you consume, even if it’s just cocktails for a start. SIT at the BAR and ask the bartender…
So, this year, I am not going to make a resolution, I am going to continue on last year’s path,…oh, but if I did have one thing I’d love to learn how to do this year, that would be to perfect making clear ice! Now that process is a bitch! More to come on that topic...
